What causes lower back pain?

Everyone experiences backpain differently, but generally it can be a dull throbbing pain or a sharp, shooting and tingling pain. The actual pain can originate in your bones, muscles, nerves, joints or connective tissues, but it can also be referred into your hips and down your legs. Causes can include weak back muscles, poor posture, sitting for long periods of time, poor physical condition, and lifting or bending incorrectly. Other causes include damage to the discs between your vertebrae, compression of root nerves, pulled muscles or ligaments in your back. Also sporting injuries, car accidents, falls, arthritis, slipped discs, narrowing of the spinal column, ruptured discs can all result in lower back pain.

How can we treat your lower back pain?

Early treatment is key to reducing your lower back pain, but first we need to identify the cause by clinically assessing the spine and may also include an MRI, CT scan, X-Rays, nerve conduction studies or an EMG to assess the electrical activity in the muscles.

With a clear diagnosis, we will create a treatment program tailored to your specific needs, which may include hands on manual therapy, movement and strengthening exercises, pain management and TENS. Healing your lower back pain will not happen overnight and may require ongoing treatment until the actual cause has been resolved. Clinical Pilates also helps with the recovery.

How can you prevent lower back pain recurring?

If there is an underlying cause for your lower back pain then that needs to be addressed to prevent a recurrence. Otherwise, movement, posture and strengthening exercise can help, as can correct lifting and bending techniques.
