GLA:D
Physio Elements is very happy to be one of the growing number of physiotherapy clinics across Australia who are now participating in the GLA:D® program.
What is GLA:D®?
GLA:D® (Good Life with Arthritis: Denmark) is the acronym for an education and exercise program developed in Denmark aimed at decreasing the pain and dysfunction associated with osteoarthritis of the knee and hip. This system is considered to be the best program in the world for improving the quality of life of osteoarthritis sufferers.
How does GLA:D® work?
The GLA:D® program consists of 12 exercise sessions and 2 educational sessions that are held over a 3-month time scale. People who have participated in this program have shown significant improvements in both function and physical movement, as well as reductions in pain, analgesics and sick leave.
Once accepted onto the program, an initial assessment of your condition will provide data that will be used to monitor your progress. This will be followed by a one-on-one exercise session where we will customise the exercises to suit your needs. Further exercises will be performed in one of our circuit classes where you will meet other people who are also on the program. Follow up assessments will be made at 3 and 12 months.
As well as providing treatment for osteoarthritis sufferers, GLA:D® also collects research data from participants. You will be asked to complete a questionnaire before you start the program, then once again after 3 and 12 months. This data helps to refine the program and help other sufferers of osteoarthritis.
Who can benefit from the GLA:D® program?
This program has helped improve the lives of people with all levels of osteoarthritis, from mild to severe. It is designed for sufferers over the age of 40 who have not had a knee replacement, however you may be able to join this program even if you don’t fit these criteria.
